Remote Restaurants Are In The Middle Of Nowhere

Updated at : 06 Sep, 2024

Kirkstone Pass Inn, Ambleside, Cumbria, England, UK

Kirkstone Pass Inn promotes its high-altitude location as "the roof of the Lakes," and visitors to the 15th-century bar with rooms may experience dizziness. That's partially because the inn, located in the Lake District National Park and surrounded by the stunning Lakeland Fells, is roughly 1,500 feet (457m) above sea level and is accessible via the Kirkstone Pass, a steep and squiggly road dubbed 'The Struggle'. Traditional pub dinners, including as pies and Sunday roasts, are pleasant after the trek.

Beano’s Cabin, Avon, Colorado, USA

Mountainside Beano's Cabin is perched high in the Beaver Creek resort in Avon, surrounded by woodland. Rather of being disadvantaged by its isolated position, the restaurant takes use of it by including the travel into the experience. There is no easy way to get here, but there is also no ugly way. In the winter, guests are whisked up in a snowcat-driven sleigh, while in the summer, they can come via shuttle or horseback. Roasted, coffee-spiced venison and pappardelle with braised rabbit are two hearty seasonal recipes.

The Rock, Unguja Island, Tanzania

The Rock Restaurant | Zanzibar

This eatery clings to a rock on Michamvi Pingwe beach in Unguja, part of the Zanzibar archipelago. At high tide, it becomes genuinely secluded, almost like an island unto itself, accessible only by boat. The Rock is atop what was formerly a fisherman's post and today has only a dozen tables beneath a palm tree canopy, where customers enjoy seafood while admiring the Indian Ocean views.

Seven Glaciers, Anchorage, Alaska, USA

The Seven Glaciers restaurant, which lies prettily on a mountainside roughly 2,300 feet (701m) above sea level, is quite a voyage. A journey on an aerial tram float over the forest canopies, providing dizzying vistas of seven (on a clear day) hanging glaciers and Turnagain Arm, which is part of the isolated Cook Inlet. Diners are then led into an elevator and along a golden carpet before being seated for their meal, which includes specialty dishes such as scallop bisque served by large picture windows.

Hell’s Backbone Grill & Farm, Boulder, Utah, USA

Hell's Backbone, located down a dirt roadway in one of America's most rural villages, has been offering organic, local, and seasonal vegetables in the middle of nowhere for more than 20 years. Jen Castle and Blake Spalding, the chefs and co-owners, manage the restaurant on Buddhist principles, sourcing fruits and vegetables from the kitchen gardens and connected six-acre farm. They don't take bookings except for bigger parties, so anyone who wants to eat here will have to make the trip and risk their chances.

Arctic Bath, Harads, Sweden

Arctic Bath - Ice Plunge Pool In The Swedish Lapland

The Arctic Bath restaurant is located not just in the middle of nowhere, but also in the midst of a river. The floating hotel, whose unusual, nest-like main structure houses the restaurant, floats on the Lule River in the summer and freezes in place when the ice forms, with access via a pontoon. The Swedish Lapland retreat's ever-changing set menu features regional items such as oil, honey, herbs, berries, and reindeer meat. You may also read this: Fabulous Eggless Pudding Recipes

KOKS, Kirkjubøur, Streymoy, Faroe Islands

KOKS is a rural restaurant located in a remote settlement on a remote island inside a remote archipelago. But that doesn't stop foodies eager to experience the two-Michelin-starred "New Faroese" cuisine, which is seasonally inspired and made with local ingredients. The dinner experience begins with a drink in a cabin near Leynavatn (Lake Leynar) before guests board a jeep for a rough trip to the restaurant. Those who visit throughout the winter may also witness the Northern Lights dancing overhead.

Refuge du Plan de l’Aiguille, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France

This hillside guesthouse and restaurant climbs roughly 7,240 feet (2,207 meters) above sea level, so hikers who are light-headed from the altitude and fatigued after trekking the Chamonix needles may believe they are hallucinating things. But, no, this is a perfect location to relax and recharge with traditional Savoyard food, the majority of which (deliciously) involves cheese and potatoes. Refuge du Plan de l'Aiguille is located at the foot of the Aiguille du Midi and offers views of Mont Blanc.

Hotel Everest View, Khumjung, Nepal

HOTEL EVEREST VIEW (Khumbu) - Hotel Reviews & Photos - Tripadvisor

The dining room of Hotel Everest View is one of the tallest in the world, which makes sense given that it is located in what claims to be the world's highest hotel. Perched on a ridge in Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park at 13,000 feet (3,962m) above sea level, the restaurant offers traditional Khumbu cuisine and boasts an antique rock in place of a back wall. Despite its isolated setting, the restaurant is open to both hotel guests and passersby - by which we mean those walking in the mountains or landing on the hotel's helipad.
